According to the CBP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/national-media-release\/cbp-issues-detention-order-tuna-harvested-forced-labor-aboard-tunago\">press release of February 6, 2019<\/a>, importers of detained shipments are provided an opportunity to export their goods or demonstrate that they were not produced with forced labor. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/USCODE-2011-title19\/pdf\/USCODE-2011-title19-chap4-subtitleII-partI-sec1307.pdf\">The Tariff Act of 1930<\/a> (19 U.S.C. \u00a7 1307) bans imports of merchandise or food produced in whole or at least in part by forced labor, including convict labor, forced child labor, and indentured labor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Human trafficking has long been considered an issue affecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/wcmsp5\/groups\/public\/---dgreports\/---dcomm\/documents\/publication\/wcms_575479.pdf\">global seafood trade<\/a>. CBP\u2019s investigations into imports of forced labor span across a variety of different industries and have been applied on a country-wide basis as well as to specific producers and, most recently, as to a shipping vessel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>How can this new import detention affect you? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Importers have an <a href=\"http:\/\/customsandinternationaltradelaw.com\/2018\/01\/11\/cheat-sheet-comply-cbps-forced-labor-requirements\/\">obligation to exercise reasonable care<\/a> and take all necessary and appropriate steps to comply with the forced labor import ban and the sanctions for forced labor and slavery of North Koreans under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.gov\/resource-center\/sanctions\/Programs\/Pages\/caatsa.aspx\">Countering Adversaries through Sanctions Act<\/a> (CAATSA).
