There are many <a href=\"http:\/\/ia.ita.doc.gov\/ftzpage\/tic.html\">benefits to an FTZ<\/a>, ultimately resulting in duty savings.<\/p>\n<p>The Miami Herald <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/2012\/06\/18\/2856343\/port-miami-wants-free-trade-zones.html\">reported<\/a> that PortMiami\u2019s application is expected to receive approval by the summer (UPDATE &#8211; PortMiami has officially been approved and operates FTZ 281), which will allow local businesses the opportunity to apply for foreign-trade zone status, enabling them to utilize their FTZ for duty savings, as goods shipped into a FTZ that are destined for export are exempt from paying CBP duties.\u00a0 Many companies use South Florida as a transhipment hub, purchasing goods from China, using South Florida as a distribution center, and then selling those goods to customers in South America.\u00a0 Using a FTZ saves the importer from having to pay customs duties on imports for exports.<\/p>\n<p>The Beacon Council \u2013 Miami-Dade County&#8217;s official economic development partnership \u2013 has coined trade\/logistics and aviation as two of the \u2018seven pillars\u2019 of Miami-Dade County in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaconcouncil.com\/webdocs\/Foundation\/targetindustrystrategiesreport.pdf\">One Community, One Goal (OCOG) initiative<\/a>. The others include International Banking &amp; Finance, Education, Creative Design, Hospitality &amp; Tourism, Information Technology, and Life Sciences &amp; Health Care.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Miami-Dade County had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaconcouncil.com\/Web\/Content.aspx?Page=importExportTotalTrade\">$95,380,550,601 <\/a>in International Trade revenue (both import and export). Wholesale trade alone accounts for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaconcouncil.com\/web\/Content.aspx?Page=wholesaleTrade\">9,383 businesses<\/a> in Miami-Dade County, employing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaconcouncil.com\/web\/Content.aspx?Page=wholesaleTrade\">62,407 people <\/a>with an average salary of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaconcouncil.com\/web\/Content.aspx?Page=wholesaleTrade\">$64,984<\/a>.
